Dona de um traço lindo, Erika retrata o feminino em grande parte dos seus trabalhos e assina ilustrações que já estamparam matérias de revistas com a Vogue, UOL, catarse e um montão de outras marcas que viram no seu estilo um tanto de poesia. Aqui ela conta um pouco sobre como decidiu viver sua carreira solo e como é trabalhar "na contra-mão do padrão no qual crescemos", como ela mesma diz.
With her beautiful trait, Erika portrays the feminine in most of her works and signs illustrations that have already featured in Vogue magazine, UOL, catarse, and a lot of other brands that have seen in her style a bit of poetry. Here she tells more about how she decided to fly solo and what it's like to work "on the opposite way of the standard model in which we grew up", as she says.
Sou formada em design e atuo como ilustradora freelancer. Como todo profissional freelancer, desempenho todas as funções de uma empresa, sendo eu mesma minha chefe, administradora, meu financeiro, marketing, enfim, tudo! É preciso muita organização pra fazer dar certo!
Os trabalhos que mais desenvolvo são em geral, para empresas, podendo ser para revistas, livros, sites, para produtos. Como trabalho secundário, vendo ilustrações pessoais aplicadas a alguns produtos, como prints, camisetas, pins e adesivos.
How do you define what you do? Tell us briefly about what your business is.
I have a degree in design and work as a freelance illustrator. Like every freelance professional, I perform all the functions of a company, being myself my boss, manager, my financial, marketing, at last, everything! It takes a lot of organization to make it work!
The works that I develop most are in general, for companies, and can be for magazines, books, websites, for products. As secondary work, I see personal illustrations applied to some products, such as prints, t-shirts, pins and stickers.
Eu descobri que queria trabalhar como ilustradora no fim da faculdade de design. Não foi tão simples no início, pelo fato de não haver muitas referências de ilustradoras. Eu não sabia que era possível viver da profissão, não sabia sobre quanto cobrar, não sabia nem por onde começar. Mas com o tempo, com interesse e dedicação, as coisas foram evoluindo e eu fui me encontrando.
How was the beginning? Did you already know exactly what you wanted or things happened in a more organic and evolutionary way?
I found out I wanted to work as an illustrator at the end of design school. It wasn't so simple at first, because there weren't many references from illustrators. I didn't know it was possible to live off the profession, didn't know how much to charge, didn't know where to start. But over time, with interest and dedication, things evolved and I found myself.

Trabalhar em casa costuma ser um desafio, mas com muita organização, dá tudo certo! Comigo sempre fluiu bem por eu já ter essa característica de me organizar e planejar desde sempre. Minha rotina muitas vezes depende de quais trabalhos estou desenvolvendo no momento.
Geralmente quando estou na parte de criar um projeto, trabalho melhor a noite. Quando estou na fase de executá-lo, faço melhor durante o dia. Assim, me conhecendo e respeitando minha maneira de trabalhar (quando possível, nem sempre o prazo do cliente permite), tudo funciona melhor!
What's your work schedule like? How is a typical workday for you?
Working at home is usually a challenge, but with a lot of organization, everything works out! For me, it always flowed well because I already have this characteristic of organizing and planning since always. My routine often depends on what work I am doing at the moment.
Usually when I'm on the part of creating a project, I work better at night. When I'm at the execution stage, I do better during the day. So, knowing myself and respecting my way of working (when possible, not always the client's deadline allows), everything works better!
A melhor parte sem dúvida, é poder inspirar e ajudar alguém de alguma forma. Amo quando recebo mensagens de que algum trabalho meu fez alguém feliz ou inspirou a fazer algo. Isso é mágico. O pior é a pressão por estar sempre produzindo, a comparação com outros artistas e os números em redes sociais.
What's the best and the most difficult thing about your work?
The best part, no doubt, is being able to inspire and help someone in some way. I love it when I get messages that some work of mine has made someone happy or inspired them to do something. That's magical. The worst part is the pressure to always be producing, the comparison with other artists and the numbers on social media.

É viver na contramão do padrão no qual crescemos. Demorou bastante tempo pra eu ter conhecimento de que era possível viver da vida criativa. Hoje em dia isso tá mudando bastante e a gente consegue administrar melhor, mas não é fácil muitas vezes, aceitar que precisamos de descanso, precisamos vivenciar a vida pra manter a mente criativa.
What role creativity plays in your life and work? What does living a creative life means to you?
It's living in the opposite direction to the pattern we grew up in. It took a long time for me to realize that it was possible to live a creative life. Nowadays this is changing a lot and we can manage better, but it's not easy many times, to accept that we need rest, we need to live life to keep the creative mind.
