Depois de duas décadas trabalhando como ilustradora na indústria têxtil ela decidiu responder ao chamado do coração para se lançar numa nova carreira como tatuadora. Agora ela se prepara para uma nova aventura: mais de um ano viajando pelo Brasil e América Latina de kombi, tatuando e vivendo uma vida minimalista com seus 4 cães. Gizele's story is pure inspiration. After two decades working as an illustrator in the textile industry she decided to answer the call from the heart to launch herself into a new career as a tattooist. Her outlook on the subject was different from the whole category (in the interview she tells why) and staying true to what she believed, despite the many warnings that it wouldn't work out, was what made all the difference. Her agenda opened on July 19, 2020, received more than 700 requests for quotations in 4 minutes!
Now she is preparing herself for a new adventure: more than a year traveling through Brazil and Latin America by kombi, tattooing and living a minimalist life with her 4 dogs. Eu sou ilustradora de pele. Eu criei esse termo pra mim porque eu sou ilustradora, e há três anos, tatuadora! Eu sempre ilustro a pele, e vejo a pele como minha área de trabalho. Ilustro as peles como se fossem meu papel!
Trabalhando na área têxtil a quase 20 anos, vi na tatuagem a possibilidade de poder fazer os desenhos detalhados e com primor. Sem cópias. Chegando no mundo da tatuagem encontro um mundo de cópias e de falta de respeito com os artistas e principalmente com as peles das pessoas! Me mantive firme. Desde meu início só fiz uma única releitura que ficou muito parecida, porque eu não tive pulso em dizer não, fiquei com dó! Mas me mantive firme desde então. Mesmo no início, precisando muito do dinheiro, eu recusei as cópias!
Não demorou muito pra minha agenda lotar! Hoje minha agenda abre duas vezes por ano. Recebo mais de 200 solicitações de orçamento em menos de 47 segundos. Outro fator que fez com que meu trabalho tivesse relevância é a questão das coberturas. Sou especialista em coberturas. Comecei a fazer por pura generosidade. Eu vi que eu podia resolver o problema das pessoas e assim fiz. Sem medo dos rótulos. Hoje as pessoas já se abriram mais pras coberturas, mas quando eu comecei ainda era um trabalho que ninguém queria fazer!
How do you define what you do? Tell us briefly about what your business is.
I'm a skin illustrator. I created this term for myself because I'm an illustrator, and three years ago, a tattoo artist! I always illustrate skin, and I see skin as my area of work. I illustrate the skins as if they were my canvas!
Working in the textile area for almost 20 years, I saw in the tattoos the possibility to make detailed and exquisite drawings. No copies. Arriving in the world of tattoo I find a world of copies and a lack of respect with the artists and especially with the skins of people! I have kept myself firm. Since my beginning, I only did a single rereading that was very similar, because I had no pulse in saying no, I felt pity... But I have stood firm since then. Even in the beginning, needing the money a lot, I refused the copies!
It didn't take long for my schedule to fill! Today my schedule opens twice a year. I receive over 200 quotations requests in less than 47 seconds. Another factor that made my work relevant is the issue of coverage. I'm a specialist in coverage. I started doing it out of sheer generosity. I saw that I could solve people's problems and so I did. Without fear of the labels. Today people have opened up more to coverings, but when I started it was still a job that nobody wanted to do!
O começo da tatuagem pra mim foi bem diferente. Quando a gente vai ingressar numa área nova, a gente procura profissionais da área. Assim eu fiz e tudo que eu ouvia era que meu desenho não dava pra tatuar, que não era desenho de tatuagem. Quando eu falava que eu queria começar da maneira certa (não plagiando ninguém), eles me diziam que eu ia morrer de fome. Sempre achei interessante como parece errado ser certa.
Eu sabia que eu não queria copiar ninguém e nenhuma pele. Na minha cabeça é um absurdo o que o mundo da tatuagem insiste em perpetuar. Eles copiam artes de uma imagem levada pelo cliente, mas não vejo ninguém se preocupar com a pessoa atrás da imagem de referência. E a ela não é dada a chance de sequer escolher se quer ter seu trabalho copiado. Ela não tem a chance de escolher se quer ter tatuagem de "amiga" com quem ela nem conhece!
Sabendo que eu não iria copiar a ninguém e que eu faria um ou dois desenhos novos a cada dia, a evolução foi rápida! Eu nunca deixei de desenhar e de produzir, e na tatuagem não foi diferente. Na minha opinião, o caminho pra encontrar nosso estilo, é produzir MUITO.
As coisas acontecem rápido pra mim! Em 3 meses tatuando eu já tive que pedir demissão da empresa onde eu trabalhava na época. No segundo ano tatuando já recebi convites de estúdios ótimos de fora do país. Já recebi convite pra ser residente em um estúdio na Califórnia! Eu nunca imaginei que me manter firme num propósito, me levaria tão longe!
How was the beginning? Did you already know exactly what you wanted or things happened in a more organic and evolutionary way?
The tattoo start for me was very different. When we enter a new area, we look for professionals in the field. So I did it and all I heard was that my tattoo design couldn't be done, it wasn't a tattoo design. When I said I wanted to start the right way (not plagiarizing anyone), they told me that I would die of hunger. I always thought it was interesting how wrong it feels to be right.
I knew I didn't want to copy anyone and no skin. In my mind it's absurd what the tattoo world insists on perpetuating. They copy art from an image taken by the client, but I don't see anyone worrying about the person behind the reference image. And she's not even given a chance to choose if she wants her work copied. She doesn't get a chance to choose if she wants to have a "friend" tattoo with who she doesn't even know!
Knowing that I wouldn't copy anyone and that I would make one or two new drawings every day, the evolution was fast! I never stopped drawing and producing, and the tattoo was no different. In my opinion, the way to find our style is to produce A LOT.
Things happen fast for me! In 3 months tattooing I already had to resign from the company where I worked at the time. In the second year tattooing I already received invitations from great studios outside the country. I already got an invitation to be a resident in a studio in California! I never imagined that sticking to a purpose would take me so far!
Trabalho original, nada de cópias / Original work, no copies.
Essa parte é interessante. Porque eu fico sabendo quem está agendada e qual arte que farei, apenas no dia, ou no máximo um dia antes! Eu funciono muito bem dessa forma! Trabalho na parte da tarde/noite! Eu chego no estúdio, higienizo tudo, principalmente a parte da aplicação! Deixo tudo organizado. Então recebo minha cliente, converso bastante pra saber das expectativas dela! Vejo se vou conseguir atender mesmo, me certifico que é mesmo meu trabalho que ela quer. Se sim, começo a criar a arte, e deixo a pessoa perto pra ela participar e ver de perto a criação da arte que ela levará pra sempre consigo! Se eu percebo que não vou conseguir atender as expectativas, prefiro perder um horário!
Desenho feito, aí eu faço o decalque (colar o carbono no corpo)! Essa parte eu também faço com bastante tempo, porque é um momento importante demais! Errar na localização é errar sem nem ter ligado a máquina! O decalque estando ok, é hora de fazer a aplicação! É o momento de desenhar novamente na pele! Quase sempre atendo só uma pessoa no dia, duas no máximo! Não tento fazer nada com pressa... Eu não conseguiria tentar fazer rápido um desenho que a tela é uma pessoa! A parte do desenho demora bastante... As vezes, é a parte que mais demora!
What's your work schedule like? How is a typical workday for you?
That part is interesting. Because I know who is scheduled and what art I will do, only on the day, or at most one day before! I work very well that way! I work in the afternoon/evening. I arrive at the studio, I clean everything, especially the application part. I leave everything organized. Then I get my client, I talk a lot to know her expectations! I see if I can really meet them, I make sure it's really my job she wants. If so, I start to create the art, and let the person close so she can participate and sees the creation of the art that she will take forever with her! If I realize that I won't be able to meet the expectations, I'd rather lose a schedule!
Drawing done, then I do the decal (stick the carbon in the body). This part I also do with a lot of time, because it's a very important moment! To make a mistake in the location is to make a mistake without even turning on the machine! The decal being ok, it's time to do the application! It's time to draw again on the skin! Almost always I attend only one person per day, two at most! I don't try to do anything in a hurry... I couldn't try to make a quick drawing that the canvas is a person! The drawing part takes a long time... Sometimes it's the part that takes the longest!
A parte que é ruim, é que meu portfolio depende bastante do meu público. E nem sempre as pessoas vão gostar exatamente do que eu gosto. Na maioria das vezes eu poderia ter ido uns passos a mais na criação da arte, mas a cliente não aceita. Cada uma de nós foi exposta a um tipo de informação durante a vida, consequentemente cada uma tem uma percepção e um gosto! Eu tenho empatia, entendo que é ela quem vai carregar a arte no corpo e deve ser assim. Mas também entendo que sempre vai existir essa limitação! E meu público vai sendo formado a partir das coisas que eu mostro e isso vai se tornando um ciclo.
What's the best and the most difficult thing about your work?
The bad part is that my portfolio depends a lot on my clients. And people won't always like exactly what I like. Most of the time I could have gone a few steps too far in creating the art, but the client won't accept it. Each one of us has been exposed to one type of information during our lives, therefore each one has a perception and a taste! I have empathy, I understand that it is she who will carry the art in her body and it must be so. But I also understand that there will always be this limitation! And my audience is being formed from the things I show and this becomes a cycle.

Criatividade pra mim é fundamental. Principalmente nas coberturas, porque cada uma delas que eu vou fazer, eu pergunto pra cliente o que ela tatuaria se ela não tivesse nada pra arrumar. Faço a cobertura com algo que ela queira e proporciono uma tatuagem nova pra essa vivente que já passou tanta vergonha com o que ela tinha é não gostava! Hehe
Sem viver uma vida criativa, esse trabalho não seria possível. A minha criatividade vem desde que me entendo por gente. Desde muito nova eu via algo que eu achava bonito e logo pensava - "Ah, mas se fosse de tal forma eu iria achar mais bonito"! Ou pensava - "Que lindo! Como posso fazer disso algo tão lindo quanto, mas que seja minha cara?" Isso me fez olhar pra tudo é já ir imaginando como ficaria se eu fizesse do meu jeito!
Não acredito que criatividade aconteça somente em momentos de inspiração. Eu não tenho momentos de inspiração! Todo dia é dia! E ainda bem! Eu atendo muita gente de fora do país, de outros estados. Já pensou se no dia de atender alguém de fora do país eu não estou no meu momento criativo? Hehe
Pra mim, criatividade é a capacidade de resolver tudo de forma eficiente e pensando sem sequer em usar caixa! Rs
What role creativity plays in your life and work? What does living a creative life means to you?
Creativity for me is fundamental. Especially in the covers, because each one of them I will do, I ask the client what she would tattoo if she didn't have anything to fix. I cover her with something she wants and provide a new tattoo for this living person who has been so ashamed of what she had and didn't like! Hehe
Without living a creative life, that work would not be possible. My creativity has been coming since I understood myself as person. From a very young age I saw something that I thought was beautiful and soon I thought - "Oh, but if it was this or that way I would find it more beautiful"! Or I thought - "How beautiful! How can I make it as beautiful as it is, but with my style?" It made me look at everything and wonder how it would look if I did it my way!
I don't believe that creativity happens only in moments of inspiration. I don't have moments of inspiration! Every day is day! And that's good! I serve many people from abroad, from other states. Have you ever wondered if in the day of serving someone from abroad I am not in my creative moment? Hehe
For me, creativity is the ability to solve everything efficiently and thinking without even using a box! Rs
