🇺🇸 Kari is a full-time product designer and also a talented ceramist. Or would it be the other way around? It really doesn't matter, because what her beautiful path teaches us is that we can explore our passions and nurture them little by little as we go. She didn't leave her full-time job, spent months studying the market, or waited for the perfect moment to launch herself passionately into a new field. She simply allowed herself to learn and improve her craft a little bit every day (or every weekend), as she tells from California in this delicious chat below.

How do you define what you do? Tell us briefly about what your business is.
I am a full-time product designer for a software company and a part-time ceramist, creating in a local ceramic studio in Southern California. In both roles, I'm a problem solver and creative, but the end results couldn't be more distant from each other. Working in a company involves learning and solving complex industry problems to design software for people. As a ceramist, I'm overcoming the challenges of using clay to design a final piece that can be used by myself or others.
Product design is heavily involved with the technical side of things, while ceramics offers a more creative and hands-on creative outlet.
A Remake Ceramics começou porque tínhamos um problema em casa. Depois do meu trabalho em tempo integral eu ia para o estúdio de cerâmica e criava muitas peças. A cerâmica estava se acumulando na casa e eu não sabia o que fazer com ela. Em vez de acumular uma tonelada de peças ou presentear membros da família, abri meu computador, tirei o pó de uma conta antiga de loja online e comecei a tirar fotos de tudo para vender. Em uma semana fiz minha primeira venda e não poderia estar mais surpresa e feliz. Uma coisa é quando sua família diz que gosta de algo que você fez, mas quando um completo estranho aprecia sua arte é uma experiência totalmente diferente. Agora continuo fazendo e listando cada peça online, levando tudo um dia de cada vez.
How was the beginning? Did you already know exactly what you wanted or things happened in a more organic and evolutionary way?
Remake Ceramics started because we had a problem at home. After my full-time job I was going into the pottery studio and creating a lot of pieces. Ceramics were piling up at the house and I didn't know what to do with them. Rather than hoarding a ton of ceramics or gifting them to family members I opened up my computer, dusted off an old online marketplace account, and started taking photos of everything to sell. Within a week I made my first sale and I couldn't have been more surprised and happy. It's one thing when your family tells you they like something you've made, it's a whole different experience when a complete stranger appreciates your art. Now I keep making and listing each piece online taking everything day by day.

Meu trabalho de tempo integral ocupa as típicas 9-17 horas e, como trabalho em casa, às vezes posso roubar a hora do almoço para fazer um pouquinho de cerâmica. Normalmente, minhas cerâmicas são limitadas ao tempo que me resta do dia. De segunda a sexta-feira o tempo geralmente é ocupado com trabalho, família, cachorro, gatos e coisas da casa. Às vezes consigo fazer umas peças aqui e ali, senão é dos fins de semana que vem a maior parte do meu tempo. Adoro acordar com uma xícara de café fresco e colocar minhas mãos em um pouco de argila.
What's your work schedule like? How is a typical workday for you?
My full-time job takes up the typical 9-5 hours and as I work from home I can sometimes steal the lunch hour to do a tiny bit of pottery at the house. Usually, my ceramics are limited to whatever time I have left in the day. Monday-Friday is usually occupied with work, family, dog, cats, and house stuff. Sometimes I can make a few pieces here and there, if not, the weekends are where most of my time comes from. I love waking up to a fresh cup of coffee and getting my hands in some clay.
O mais difícil é deixar outras coisas pra lá e estar presente no momento. Gosto de analisar tudo em excesso, o que leva à paralisia por análise em cada forma, marca, cor e foto. Demoro um pouco para lembrar que é apenas argila e é tudo um experimento. Também me sinto culpada por dedicar um tempo a mim mesma, em vez de sair com a família ou completar alguns itens da minha lista de tarefas. Sempre há algo por fazer e nos últimos anos aprendi que preciso me priorizar tanto quanto as outras coisas para poder ser feliz também.
A melhor coisa é quando sou capaz de reconhecer onde cresci nas minhas criações e a sensação de realização que vem com isso. As peças esmaltadas finais que saem do forno também são fantásticas, mas a viagem que cada peça faz é uma história incrível. Cerâmica é um processo longo e lento, não dá para apressar nada. Estou aprendendo e aperfeiçoando a cada etapa e a qualquer momento, algo pode dar terrivelmente errado, tornando essa peça inútil. Estar consciente o suficiente para perceber os micro-detalhes do crescimento me mantém animada para ver o que posso realizar no dia seguinte.
What's the best and the most difficult thing about your work?
The most difficult thing is letting go and being present in the moment. I like to over-analyze everything, which leads to analysis paralysis for every shape, mark, color, and photo. It takes me a while to remember it's just clay and it's all an experiment. I also feel guilty for taking the time for myself instead of hanging out with family or getting some other checklist items complete. There's always something to do and over the last couple of years, I've learned that I need to prioritize myself just as much as the other things so that I can be happy too.
The best thing is when I am able to recognize where I've grown in my craft and the sense of accomplishment that comes with it. The final glazed pieces that come out of the kiln are awesome too, but the journey that every piece takes is an incredible story. Ceramics is a long and slow process, you can't rush anything. I am learning and perfecting at each step and at any point in time, something could go terribly wrong rendering that piece useless. Being conscious enough to notice the micro-details of growth keeps me excited to see what I can accomplish the next day.

Acho que as pessoas ouvem a palavra criativo e acreditam que têm que saber desenhar ou fazer algo para que esse rótulo seja aplicado em suas vidas, pessoal ou profissionalmente. Viver uma vida criativa não é levar as coisas pelo valor que aparentam ter. É desafiar tudo aquilo que é posto na sua frente. Fazer as coisas de maneira um pouco diferente da pessoa ao seu lado. É preciso muita prática para se sentir confiante o suficiente para seguir seu próprio caminho.
What role creativity plays in your life and work? What does living a creative life means to you?
I think people hear the word creative and believe that they have to be able to draw or make something to have that label applied to their life, personally or professionally. Living a creative life is not taking things at face value. It is challenging what is put in front of you. Doing things just a little differently than the person next to you. It takes a lot of practice to feel confident enough to follow your own path.
